Its been so long since I've done song of the day, I'm not even sure it's going to work. My ISP has changed hosts and my operating system has been upgraded, I'm not so sure these scripts will even run right. Anyhow. Silly me, I'd thought the most beautiful way this song could have possibly done was already achieved by Axl Rose. I have to admit that Antony and the Johnsons haven't really blown me away before, but this song and his voice meld together so beautifully, it sort of blows me away. This entire soundtrack of covers from the new Bob Dylan movie, I'm Not There, is pretty spectacular.

This song N.W.A. did that never appeared on an album until their Greatest Hits cd was released. This originally appeared on an EP that was released just after Ice Cube left the group, there is a veiled reference to him leaving in this song, but none of the harsh words that N.W.A. had for him on later tracks. This is one of my favorite songs by them, it tells some sort of story, even if it's just about them running. And each member gets two verses and they're all tight and flow together pretty well, even if after all their running, they don't get very far.

This album is getting a bit of press in the music blogs lately. I like this song because it's a menagerie of music: rock instruments playing willy-nily for a while, then airy and fantasy sounding percussion, and a dub of her voice doing vocables the whole time. I love the word vocables.

I saw these guys open up for The Fiery Furnaces and they kinda blew me away. The lead singer didn't look like he had the voice or the stage presence that he pulled off once the show started. They looked like they were having fun and their songs were all ... well, good.

This song is beautiful. Sad and lovely. I feel so emo. I listened to this song a few times in a row on a bullet train from Tokyo to Aomori and got misty eyed, but don't tell anyone. I feel emotions from Ben Gibbard's voice regardless of what he's actually saying. This song is also beautiful because it is over 6 minutes long and there doesn't seem to be a refrain, just transitions and maybe a story arc. I still want a new postal service album.

The Smashing Pumpkins just released a new album. I listened to this album through a few times, trying to find a track that I loved enough to make SOTD. After each song was over, I found that none of them were quite there, and what I wanted was something cleaner, stronger, and more polished. What I really wanted was this, Zero, from the Mellon Collie... album. When the Smashing Pumpkins are rocking, this is what I want them to sound like. Also, a very happy birthday wish to my girl, Amy. She's far away in Indonesia, I hope this song finds her safe and having a great day.

Recently, with the help of Guitar Hero 2, I've come to a revelation about myself. I LOVE good metal. Love it like cookies and ice cream. I remember when I first heard this band on the cbc radio3 podcast, I was thinking they sounded like something straight out of the 80s. really grinding guitars and squealing, but melodic, lyrics. beautiful.

Hey! Remember me? I have a song of the day list, and you're subscribed to it! I've discovered recently that I suck at sticking to things. But here's to another batch of songs of the day. We'll see how long I last before I get bored with it and move on to something else. If there are things you've been really digging lately, let me know, I'm always trying to find new music to quell the voices in my head. They might even make it on to the list. This song that I picked to bring the list back is by Bishop Allen, sounds like a guy, but it's a band. Their myspace page says they sound like an oatmeal cookie. Thats about right, they're buttery and go down easy, but they also feel like you're doing something almost healthy for yourself. In 2006 they released an EP every month and this is off of the August one. I've only known about this band for a week or so, but I'm looking forward to their new CD in July called Broken Strings Tell all your friends that the SOTD is back! http://songlist.gapjad.net

This track reminds me of a mix of Iron & Wine, Will Oldham, and Deliverance. The beautiful mix of the banjos and vocal melodies had me hooked from the start, even if the album is so strangely named. Plus, the only reason I got this album was because there is a cover of Head over Heels (yes, Tears for Fears) on here that sounds absolutely silly (and compelling). The album cover alone is good for a giggle.

I'm feeling lazy today. This Lee Coombs cd is a no-brainer for song of the day. This cd is full of big beat techno, reminiscent of Crystal Method. I'm not really sure what turned me on to this cd, it's been in my collection forever. It makes great background music for whatever I'm doing: cleaning the house, coding yank, playing video games, baking cookies, building erector sets... whatever. Have a good weekend!

Though it says it's by Ice Cube, this 4.5 minute long song with no chorus or hook/refrain is a collage of west coast rappers. You can hear the likes of King Tee, W.C., Mack 10, I even remember this being the first time I heard Coolio. Even though it's not, I always remember it as being acapella, the beat and music is irrelevant. Listen closely and learn all about mid-90s gang life.

This song is one of their most popular, something upbeat and dancey to get you going on a monday morning. I never intended for this week to be so retro. This Presidents of the United States of America album was a favorite of mine when it came out in the 90s. I remember thinking that it didn't really have much depth and was going to become really overplayed very shortly. Surprisingly, this album has stood the test of time, at least for me, and all the tracks are still as catchy as ever.

WARNING: This song is dirty. Esham takes something as benign as baking a cake and turns it into something very pornographically graphic. It was also one of my top 3 favorite songs from this two disc set he released while I was still in high school. Esham is classified as an Acid Rapper, and I'm not really sure why. I just know him as a hardcore detroit rapper that used worshipping the devil as his gimmick in the 90s. Wonder why he never broke through to the mainstream?

Honestly, I remember this song being a lot more rockin' than it is. Perhaps
I just need to turn up the bass and make this song a little heavier. I can
remember as a teenager thinking that this song was so scandalous, with it's
veiled references to things I couldn't even imagine but knew they shouldn't
be talked about on mainstream radio. Today, in my music collection next to
Peaches and 2LiveCrew, they sound rather tame.

This week has a theme. To kick things off, here is a track from the Beastie Boys. It took me a long time to fully appreciate this album and the one after it. The few pure-rap tracks on them got notice, but anything with more instrumentation, I looked over and outside my spectrum of acceptable music. Thankfully, time has made me wiser and realize that these entire albums have enough merit to listen to, and their roots are deeply hip-hop.

This Australian hip hop artist's album has kinda blown me away in the one day I've heard it. It reminds me of the grimey, almost dancehall-sounding hip-hop that I've heard come from Britian. I usually don't like that stuff, but this new breed has really turned me on to it. With this track featuring the familiar voice of Sage Francis, I immediately found it catchy.

So, I was lookingup Peter Framton the other day and made note of him contributing to George Harrison's first album. I thought to myself about how much I really loved George Harrison's last album, so I grabbed this one. Totally excellent. Somehow reminds me of the Beatles but with a fuel injected 70s rock-folk guitar base. You can totally hear frampton working that guitar in this track.
